This month's speakers
BCG presents Dean Holland who will be a regular presenter at BCG over the coming months.
Dean is a professional trainer and runs Take Better Photos (takebetterphotos.com.au) where he has taught many hundreds of people how to improve their photography, both at the moment the shutter clicks and later during the processing stages.
Over the next few months, Dean will be presenting at BCG digital nights on many varied subjects.
Tonight Dean will cover the fundamentals of digital image presentation "Getting it out there".
Digital Night March
Print Preparation
18 March
Continuing our month of printing, we'll be looking at the how to get your image out of the computer and to the printer. There are a number of steps involved to ensure the colours you see are the colours you are going to get.
Darren Jew (darrenjew.com) will show you some of the techniques he uses to print his gorgeous work, ensuring that the colours he's captured are the ones which appear on his prints.
Darren is one of the worlds most accomplished underwater photographers and has shot in the exotic locations of Africa, Alaska, Patagonia and Antarctica. He has had his work published internationally in books and magazines and was named the Canon/AIPP Australian Science, Environment and Nature Photographer of the Year for 2007, 2009 and 2010.

After the break, Dean Holland will continue his series on editing and adjusting images. Tonight Dean will cover histograms, brightnesss, contrast in the topic "Get the Brightness right"

How do you correct skin tones and clean up blemishes? Rod Talbot will show us the tricks of the trade to smooth skin and clean complexions.
Ray Lockett will show you alternative software designed especially for portrait editing, Portrait Professional. Definitely worth a look and if you're working with portraits.

IR photography was previously only achieveable using special film. Now, thanks to special modifications, IR can be captured on digital cameras. Understanding how it works and how to make it produce images is quite difficult. Fortunately Dave Edney can explain these technicalities and show you the new look of images now possible with and IR camera.

Nick Rains - The Art & Craft of Landscape Photography
BCG is proud to present an evening with Nick Rains.
Originally from the UK, Nick made Australia his home in 1990 and is well known for his travel and landscape photography. Nick is one of Australia's most well known and most published photographers with credits to his name in Australian Geographic, Sports Illustrated, London Times, Paris Match, Stern and many other well known publications.
On Monday 29th April, Nick will be presenting at Brisbane Camera Group on the Art and Craft of Landscape Photography.
The evening will start at 7.00 pm promptly and will cover:
- The essentials of how to think about landscape photography:researching a location, preparing for the shoot, what kit to take, what to do on the day.
- Post production for landscape photography: workflow to get the most out of your landscapes, maximising tonal range, sweetening the image for printing.
- Throughout the evening, Nick will use his own images to demonstrate his techniques. You will be treated to a showcase of amazing images and some of the stories behind the pictures.

Focus Night February
Photographing the Queensland Ballet in an unobtrusive manner places unique demands on a photographer’s skills and tests the boundaries of the equipment as motion needs to be frozen in a low light environment. On Monday 11th February 2013, Ken Sparrow will explain the techniques he uses to capture the activities of the Queensland Ballet and provide a showcase of his work. http://kensparrowphotography.com.au

Almost a dying art, printing and displaying your images is the most satisfying way of showing your work. If you've never used a mat cutter this is your chance to see how easy it can be.
Several of our members are bringing in their own cutter to demonstrate how to make frames for your prints and sharing tips and tricks to make the job easy and look great.

Guest Speaker - David Lloyd & Angela Blakely
Ethical Photography in Sensitive Situations
David Lloyd and Angela Blakely began working together in 1995 when commissioned to document the Australian Army’s involvement in the Rwanda crisis. On their travels together and separately through Somalia, Bosnia, Malawi, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Australia and many other countries, Lloyd and Blakely have worked in highly sensitive areas documenting health and social issues. Brisbane Camera Group is pleased to host Angela & David who will be talking about Ethical Photography in Sensitive Situations.

Damien Bredberg
Damien is a master professional photographer working for some of Australia's largest advertising and commercial agencies. His uniquie ability to visualise the final scene enables a high quality product, full of action, life and character.
We've had Damien's collaborator, Danny Joslyn, at BCG in 2012. Now meet the man who makes Danny's images possible.
Update:
Damien has very kindly agreed to accept a small number of images from members for him to work on in photoshop. He will show the image he started with and discuss the techniques he used to develop into a final image.
Entries have now closed but we look forward to what Damien can do with the images sent in.

February Outing
Date: Sunday 3 February - 10am
Brisbane Powerhouse - Front entrance door, carpark side (not river side)
Set subject objective: Textures (for April comp)
Shoot commences shortly after 10am and continues until around 12:30. This is a great shoot for beginners who are still getting familiar with their camera settings as we will likely be in optimum shooting conditions for testing new cameras and techniques in an interesting and visually rich environment. It's a great chance too to scout out photos for the up-and-coming competitions.
March Outing
Date: Sunday 3rd March - 4.30pm
Location: Fortitude Valley, Brunswick St Mall, outside McDonalds
Set subject objective: On The Street (for May competition)
Fortitude Valley has some very interesting street art and culture. We can investigate some of the alleys and back streets, as well as the street vendors, local characters, and Chinatown lights/ car light trails. This will be a great opportunity to scout out photos for the May competition "On the street".
Plan: Meet at McDonalds and team up to explore the surrounding area. Beginners will be offered the chance for some one-on-one time with an experienced photographer. Meet again at 6.15 pm for a quick dinner at a local restaurant. At about 7.15pm, anyone who would like to photograph night streets/Chinatown lights/car light trails can join other members of the group for an hour session. We'll finish at about 8.15pm.

May Outing
Date: Sunday 5 May - meet 8am for an 8.15 start and finish around 11.30am
Location: Mt Coot-Tha Botanic Gardens - outside the Coffee Shop
Set subject objective: Shallow depth of field (May comp.)
Members, potential members and their guests are welcome to attend.
The Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha offer visitors a living museum of native and exotic plant collections. The garden's themed sections include a scented garden, bamboo grove, an arid zone with a cactus garden, Japanese Gardens, waterfalls, rainforest terraces, a tropical greenhouse and the largest collection of Australian native rainforest trees in the world.
The venue offers us the chance to explore a challenging and specialist realm of photography, providing insights into a world we pass every day but often don't take the time to explore. Macro/nature specialists from the club will on hand to offer advice and some instruction.
We'll meet in the coffee shop for morning tea at about 11am. There is no cost for this outing. Morning tea will be at each person's own cost.

June Outing - Updated!
Date: Sunday 2 June - 6am
Location: Shorncliffe Pier and surrounds
Set subject objective: Scapes (for July comp)
Meeting Point: Shorncliffe Pier, Lower Moora Park, 65A Park Parade, Shorncliffe. To get to the car park you drive from Park Parade (which runs along the top of the cliffs) down the small road that leads to Lower Moora Park (less than a minute's drive down hill). There's plenty of car parking and the road is a little steep but very safe. Both the car park and the road down to the shore are on the map. **Note: on the map link above the pier is named as "Sandgate" Pier. It is incorrectly labelled on this map. The location of the pier is correct but the pier is called "Shorncliffe" Pier.
July Outing
Date: Sunday 7 July - 8.50am
Location: GOMA
Set subject objective: Lines (for August comp)

Meeting Point: Outside the main doors, in front of the GOMA store. GOMA opens at 9am.
Museum etiquette: No flash photography, no tripods, no large bags.
Details: We'll have the opportunity to photograph the exterior of the building as well as explore the exhibit rooms and public areas. Keeping in mind the set subject objective for August - "lines" - this is our chace to take advantage of the supurb light, open spaces and design features of this lovely building.
We'll meet at 11am for a coffee in the GOMA Cafe Bistro (own cost).
